Hi, Francesco here!
Just so you know, you are receiving this because you subscribed to the Newsletter of the podcast Data Science at Home. Thank you so much for subscribing and supporting me.
As we all know, it’s been a tough time, especially in the last three months. Pandemics and wars are never a good combo for humanity. What I am seeing as a characterizing trend, however - way before the war - is a more realistic consideration of the capabilities of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms so far.
I have the feeling that researchers are consolidating some of the past ideas in AI and ML, instead of creating new ones. I believe that’s part of a creative process that affects also science and technology. As they say, one cannot grow indefinitely.
As a direct consequence of the events of the world, it seems that AI and ML are playing more and more direct roles in fields such as defense and military. I believe this was a direct consequence of some of the previous successful cases, again IMHO way before the war.
However, when dramatically novel ideas are no longer forged, it’s easy to confuse a stalled period with AI winter. I don’t believe we are facing a winter at this time.
The consolidation period that is following the more creative one is a necessary step that makes technology more adoptable. I am referring to the trend of optimizing models for smaller devices, reducing the size of models to increase efficiency and sometimes accuracy too.
I have published a small series about Embedded Machine Learning (EML)
Another important improvement, I wish continues to grow in awareness is about making AI environmentally friendly.
Last but not least, here is an episode about the state of AI in 2022. It summarizes a long report from the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI)
Aaaah! I almost forgot, I have started a Twitch channel for some hands-on sessions in all things machine learning and AI and live talks :)
You can find the schedule here and you are always welcome to participate and interact with the streaming, live!
Speak with you next time!
